The need for a new City Hall has been identified and discussed for a decade or more. Initially City Hall renovations were discussed in 2002/2003. Ultimately it was decided that renovations were not viable and a new City Hall was required.
Over the past two years different potential sites have been reviewed. In general terms, City Halls are located in the vicinity of the downtown core. In 2012 Council approved that we would build the new city hall at our present location. This year we will need to temporarily relocate City Hall Staff to the Mirror Lake Centre. Once that is done we will demolish the City Hall Building and will begin construction of the new City Hall.
The facility will accommodate staff growth over the next 30 years in the Customer Service, Administration, Finance, Corporate Services, and Infrastructure and Planning departments.
Through this process, it was identified that the new City Hall facility would need to be approximately 38,750 square feet (sq. ft.) in size. As well, projected parking demands for this facility were identified to include approximately 100 off-street parking stalls.
The design consists of 38,750 sq. ft. consisted of a 4 storey building, with 3 floors completed and the 4th floor being shelled in for future use. A basement has not been included in the plans.
